There are many different kinds of Counselling, and there is no clear distinction between the words counselling and psychotherapy, however both involve talking with a trained person in a focused way about whatever is troubling you.

At the Phoenix we start with an initial meeting where you will meet the counsellor who will ask some basic questions about you and what you want from the counselling.  It is also an opportunity to decide whether you would like to go ahead with any more sessions.

Sessions usually last about an hour and are in private comfortable surroundings.

Reasons why people seek counselling are varied and we may all sometimes feel overwhelmed or feel unsatisfied with our relationships, employment, health, or spiritual lives. Or something may happen to us and we don't feel the same any more or are unable to put the past behind us. We may notice that our behaviour or habits have changed and that we feel anxious or depressed about things. We may not enjoy life as we would like or feel that we cannot carry on as usual.

We may be able to identify the cause of our feelings but not know what to do or how to cope. Sometimes we do not understand why we feel the way we do. By talking we can clarify the problem and identify changes we would like to make. We can also come to understand more about our own strengths and resources so that we can feel more in charge of our lives.
